Large- and Small-Scale Climate Influences Spring Migration Departure Probability of American White Pelicans

Endogenous (e.g., age and sex) exogenous climate resource availability) factors influence avian migration phenology. However, little is known regarding the ecology of birds at non-breeding grounds, including American white pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos). We used Global Positioning System transmitters to track movements 51 pelicans from 2002 2012. Kaplan–Meier model estimate spring probabilities quantify partial with 94 events Cox proportional hazards evaluate effects North Atlantic Oscillation index (NAOI), Southern Index (SOI), daily precipitation on propensity departures. Increases in NAOI SOI enhanced departure. The departure was also positively related precipitation. Male have greater than female pelicans. Spring adult are those immature Therefore, both large-scale local climatic conditions affect probabilities. Advanced migratory phenology caused by changes warming temperature increased may result mismatch arrival food availability breeding grounds subsequent population declines.
